Überfällig findet Rezensent Harro Zimmermann diese Biografie, die den Freiherrn von Knigge endlich in das rechte Licht rückt. Denn daran, dass wir es bei dem rührigen Landadeligen nicht nur mit einem "skurrilen Moral-Apostel" zu tun haben, sondern mit einem Aufklärer, Bürgerfreund und Parteigänger der Französischen Revolution, steht für den Rezensenten fest.

Jahrhunderts, der neben seinem – von Anfang an verkannten – Bestseller »Über den Umgang mit Menschen« ein umfangreiches Lebenswerk hinterlassen hat. In dieser ersten großen Biografie stellt uns Ingo Hermann den Freiherrn Adolph Knigge (1752 –1796) vor, wobei er sich die in den letzten Jahren wiederbelebte Knigge-Forschung zunutze macht.

Leben. Knigge: Adolf Franz Friedrich Ludwig Freiherr v. K., Schriftsteller, geb. den 16. Oct. 1752 zu Bredenbeck bei Hannover als einziger Sohn des Oberhauptmanns K., der 1766 tief verschuldet unsicheren Familienverhältnisse haben früh auf Knigge's Charakter ungünstig eingewirkt.

Adolph Knigge wurde am 16. Oktober 1752 geboren . Freiherr Adolph Franz Friedrich Ludwig Knigge war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und Aufklärer, der insbesondere für sein Werk „Über den Umgang mit Menschen“ (1788) bekannt ist, in Anlehnung dessen zahlreiche nach ihm benannte Benimmbücher entstanden.

Knigge. Er wächst in Bredenbeck auf, wo er von Privatlehrern unterrichtet wird. Im Alter von zehn Jahren verliert Adolph seine Mutter, und drei Jahre später, 1766, den Vater. Die Eltern hinterlassen ihm Schulden von über 100 000 Reichstalern, die durch Abgabe der Güter ausgeglichen werden.

Auflagengeschichte. 1788 erschien Knigges Sammlung von Umgangsregeln: Über den Umgang mit Menschen, häufig kurz „Knigge“ genannt, in der ersten selben Jahr erschien eine zweite Auflage. Die dritte, vierte und fünfte Auflage erschienen in den Jahren 1790, 1792 bzw. 1796.

Er war ein Spross der uradligen niedersächsischen, allerdings verarmten Adelsfamilie seinem Geburtsort Bredenbeck am Ostrand des Deisters besaß bereits um 1338 der Ritter Hermann Knigge ein Schloss. Mit herzoglicher Erlaubnis wurde es in die mächtigste Wasserburg des Calenberger Landes ausgebaut. Die Burg brannte 1550 ab und wurde noch wehrhafter wiederaufgebaut.
